Pottery starts with dirt. We begin by choosing a clay with the right properties to help us get a beautiful form and finish once our piece is completed. Before we can start to shape a piece, we use a process called wedging to remove any pockets of air from the clay that could create weak spots. We use a combination of sculpting and throwing clay on a pottery wheel to put together our pieces. For instance, the symmetric body of our teapot will come off the wheel and have handles and spouts carefully added by hand. The clay is then allowed to dry until it becomes leather-hard. At this stage in the process, the clay can be carved, and some details can be added. Additional drying, controlled over a period of a few days, creates a firm, dry product that this ready to be fired in a kiln. Our electric kilns heat the clay to several thousand degrees for several hours, creating a product that is strong and tough, ready for your everyday use. In the final stages of the process, we use glazes to turn our functional shape into an eye-popping piece of art. The glazes are applied by dipping, dripping, and even painting the liquid glaze on the pot. A final fire in the kiln will make the glaze harden and create the final product you see on our website.
